Thanksgiving Theme Happy Hour Party

This is part of my First Thursday Happy Hour series, a monthly tradition my husband and I started as a fun way to reconnect with friends and neighbors after becoming empty nesters. Each month features a new theme, easy hosting ideas, and real photos from our gatherings. You can browse previous themes here.

Invitation Wording Ideas

I’ve learned that guests love a theme, but only if it feels fun and easy—not overdone or stressful. Every month, my invitation sets the tone for the evening and gives just enough direction to help people join in the spirit of it. I usually include a short theme description, a few hints about what to expect, and an open dress suggestion so everyone feels comfortable.

Here’s the invitation wording I used for our Thanksgiving/Turkey Happy Hour:

WHAT TO EXPECT: With cooler nights we’ll have a firepit, warming cocktails (Signature Drinks are back) along with beer, wine and mocktails. We’ll have a sampling of appetizers fit for a pre-Thanksgiving gathering.

OUR THEME: Come in anything comfy, or straight from work – anything goes! For those that are into the Thanksgiving spirit early, anything turkey related will fit right in. Break out that turkey hat you thought you’d never have a chance to wear again 😉 or channel your creativity to find a new addition to your Thanksgiving spirit wardrobe.

TIMING: Come for a minute or stay the whole time, we know work/school nights can be tough!

SPORTS FANS: We’ll have a large screen TV you can watch your favorite game – no judgement from us… we ditched church for Sunday morning hockey games.

Clean-up:

Clean-up has become its own system. I keep a visible trash can for easy use and reuse divided wine boxes from Trader Joe’s to collect used glassware and empties. It keeps everything neat and makes recycling easy the next day.

And finally, a few little touches go a long way. Our dog always wears a matching bandana or ribbon, and the welcome sign at the door helps set the tone right away. Guests notice the details.
